There was something King Yu did not know about Fangfeng. Since the flood had started, the creature had not been seen on the top of any of the four mountains. He had stayed down in the valley below, helping the people who could not leave their homes because they were too frail or too poor to escape. When the floods came, Fangfeng used his huge body to keep the families who stayed in the valley from drowning. He helped them rebuild their homes when the waters were lower again, and he helped them find food when their crops had died. While King Yu was busying himself with the people on the mountaintops, Fangfeng had never forgotten those who did not have the privilege of being among them.

But although King Yu had not seen Fangfeng’s kindness from his palace, other creatures had. The cranes who flew from one mountain to another had looked down and seen Fangfeng helping the people who had stayed in the valley. So when Fangfeng’s ox ears appeared in the distance, the cranes flew around him in a circle, hiding him from the dragons that King Yu had sent to kill him. When Fangfeng arrived and told the king what had happened, he was taken aback—then thanked him for his kindness. Everyone who lived at the top of the mountains climbed onto Fangfeng’s back and went back down into the valley. There, safe from the flood, they rebuilt their villages. And they promised never to forget how unkind it is to leave other people behind.
